Title: Consultant Qualifications: PhD, PE Expertise: Fire & Explosion Analysis
|
Dr. Thomas H. Pratt joined Burgoyne Incorporated as Vice President in 1989. His projects have included accident investigations, consultations, and expert witness assignments in fire and explosions, particularly where electrostatic phenomena are of concern. He has served as Consultant to Burgoyne Incorporated since 2000, presenting seminars and appearing as an expert witness.
Dr. Pratt was awarded his BS degree by East Tennessee State College and his MS and Ph.D. by Yale University. He began his professional career in 1959 with the Rohm and Haas Company at the Redstone Research Laboratory in Huntsville, Alabama where his initial assignments concerned the application of basic principles of physical chemistry for the prevention of explosions in solid propellants.
His experience at Rohm and Haas included: establishment of shock friction, impact, thermal and electrostatic laboratory test protocols to characterize the explosive properties of propellants and propellant ingredients; application of basic thermodynamic and kinetic principles to the prediction of the explosive nature of energetic materials; and planning and performing of small scale explosion tests to develop design criteria for process equipment. In addition, Dr. Pratt planned and performed large scale explosion tests to study shock waves and develop design criteria for construction of plant facilities. He transferred to the corporate headquarters of Rohm and Haas in 1971 and was given assignments for the testing of building materials in realistic fire situations.
In 1971 Dr. Pratt joined the Hazards Evaluation and Risk Control Services of Hercules Incorporated where he served as a hazards analyst where he analyzed industrial processes for prevention of fires and explosions, investigated numerous industrial incidents where gases, vapors, dusts, and condensed phase materials were involved in deflagrations, detonations, thermal runaways, and physical explosions, and developed an in-depth expertise on the electrostatic ignition sources of explosions in industrial processes. He became Division Manager before leaving Hercules to join Burgoyne Incorporated.
Dr. Pratt is a Professional Engineer. He has served on the National Fire Protection Association Committee on Static Electricity and on the American Petroleum Institute Task Group on RP2003. Dr. Pratt is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
